Along with the excitement of seeing each other face to face, we understand that the environmental impact is a concern for many as we return to in-person events.
The measures taken by the ESC to reduce the impact of the congress on the environment
Firstly, the location is important. Barcelona takes climate change seriously as evidenced by its Biosphere Platinum status – making it the first destination to have received this distinction due to its sustainability commitment and promotion of responsible tourism.
The venue itself, Fira Barcelona Gran Via, also has many initiatives in place. These include waste-management systems, 100% green energy and a sustainable air conditioning system. 60% of the food will be made by local producers, all served in compostable and recyclable materials. Any leftover food and beverages will be donated to “Barcelona shares food” in cooperation with the NGO Nutrition without Borders.
It’s important to note that the ESC works with partners who take sustainability seriously – in the battle against climate change, our long-standing partner, ACS audiovisual solutions, has regreened an area of 73.000m2 of forest in Africa, equal to the total floor space of ESC Congress 2022.
Most importantly, the ESC will offset the entire carbon footprint of all ESC Congress activities in Barcelona, including the venue, energy consumption, catering and stand building, as well as accommodation and activities within Barcelona for all congress participants. This is a significant step forward and our initiatives to address the impact of our activities will continue to evolve.
And what about you ? You will be able to take responsibility for your environmental impact, by visiting the ‘Step Towards a Greener Future’ Cube in the Lounge & Exchange Area. The cube houses a calculator allowing you to estimate and then offset your travel emissions.
