Activities
In 1948, an association of Uruguayan physicians was founded in Montevideo with the name of Uruguayan Society of Cardiology (Sociedad Uruguaya de Cardiología - SUC) aiming at “deepening and promoting the studies of scientific problems arisen from cardiovascular diseases”. It was however not until 1964 that the School of Medicine started to grant the title of cardiologist.
In 1966, the Uruguayan Society of Cardiology organised its first Uruguayan Meeting of Cardiology in Punta del Este. Since 1997, the Uruguayan Meeting of Cardiology has been a yearly event. The programme is available on the SUC web site
The highest authority of the society is the General Assembly of Fellows. The SUC is ruled by a Board of Directors with nine fellow cardiologists: President, Vice President, Secretary, Pro-Secretary, Treasurer and four members.
These authorities are renewed partially every year and are elected by the fellows. In addition, the society has a Treasury Commission and an Electoral Commission and an Ethical Court. A Continual Medical Education Committee was created in 1983.
Several Scientific Councils work in the society:
- Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia
- Artherosclerosis
- Clinical Cardiology
- Critical Cardiology
- Echocardiography
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Training Cardiologists
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Nuclear Cardiology
- Prevention and Rehabilitation

The Uruguayan Society of Cardiology is a member of the South American Society of Cardiology (Sociedad Sudamericana de Cadiología), of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology (Sociedad Interamericana de Cardiología) and the World Heart Federation.
