Edito of the chair of the Council for the mandate 2024-2026
Professor Paul Evans, new Chairperson of the Council for Basic Cardiovascular Science (CBCS), shares his vision for the next two years which includes key priorities for CBCS. These crucial points are:
- supporting early career researchers
- strengthening connections with basic science working groups
- bridging basic and clinical science
- built on past successes, these three points will help CBCS to evolve and flourish.
Who we are
The Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science (CBCS) exists to raise the profile of basic science within the ESC. It brings together representatives from Working Groups and external subject-related European Societies. Younger scientists were supported by CBCS to create the Scientists of Tomorrow, one of the ESC’s Young Communities, who actively contribute to all the Council’s activities.
What we do
- Research: ESC First Contact Initiative Grant, ESC Basic Research Fellowship, Outstanding Achievement Award
- Travel grants: Frontiers in Cardiovascular Biology Travel Grants
- Congresses and Courses: CBCS Summer School, Frontiers in CardioVascular Biomedicine (FCVB)
- Annual prize giving at Basic Science Networking cocktail
- Journal: Cardiovascular Research
- Young Community of Basic Scientists: Scientists of Tomorrow
Role of the Council
- To promote pure science disciplines via the ESC basic science programme of ESC Congress
- To bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice
- To allow basic scientists to present their speciality at ESC Congress
- To act as a Europe-wide forum for cardiovascular research societies and a conduit for positive collaboration
- To share experiences with other ESC Associations and Councils
- To establish links with sister societies
- To improve the basic science programme of ESC Congress
